An Inconvenient Truth

Hi!
You might have already found out that I enjoy working with Cristina. She's told me you watched this great docummentary last year, so why don't we do an activity about it using our English?
Visit the film's official website (http://www.climatecrisis.net/) and see if you're able to answer to any of the following questions (Just pick a question). If the number of the question is in red, choose another question, since a red number means an already answered question.
1.At what Film Festival did the movie become a hit?
2. How was Al Gore related to the US government?
3. Why, in the first place, is it a good thing that carbon dioxide and other gases warm the surface of the planet naturally by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere?
4. What changes are already proving that global warming is real? (Just mention one)
5. What catastrophic consequences can we expect if the warming continues? (Just mention one)
6.How can we reduce the impact at home? (Just mention one measure)
7. How can drivers reduce the impact? (Just mention one measure)
8. Complete any of these 10 simple tips:
a) change _________________
b) drive _________________
c) recycle _________________
d) check _________________
e) use less _________________
f) avoid products _________________
g) adjust _________________
h) plant _________________
i) turn off _________________
Come on, it's easy!

I like your English classes.

Good Night!!!!!!! =P

Hi Paula!
First of all, thanks for the compliment! It means a lot to me!
And, yes, the docummentary became a hit at the Sundance Film Festival.
The Sundance Film Festival is a film festival held in January in Utah, the United States, and ranks alongside the Cannes, Venice, Berlin film festivals for importance. It is the largest independent cinema festival in the U.S. The festival is the premier showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers. You can visit its website if you're curious about it! http://www.sundance.org/festival/index.asp

Hi Cindy!
This is a correct answer to question number 5, indeed. There are still 5 more consequences that can be mentioned by other students to answer this very same question. Remember that 'drought' means 'a long period when there is little or no rain'.

Hi Mireia

5)Deaths from global warming will double in just 25 years, to 300.000 people a year.

Good bye!

hi Mireia!
I answer the question number five.
5. One catastrophic consequence is:
Global sea levels could rise by more than 20 feet with the loss of shelf ice in Greenland and Antarctica, devastating coastal areas worldwide.
It's great?
bye mireia!

It's a good answer, though.
You know that Americans measure length with feet. Can anyone convert 20 feet into meters?

Mireia Xortó said...

Hi Victor!
I assume you're Victor Escala, aren't you?
Next time, sign with your name and surname, please!
You're right about the answer! Good job!

Mireia Xortó said...

Hi M.Carmen,
I'm not quite sure you understood what I was asking in number 4. Have a look at: http://www.climatecrisis.net/thescience/
and try again, please.
Question 4 is:
What changes are already proving that global warming is real? (Just mention one).
So, I was asking about changes that are already noticeable, not changes that have to come yet.

Cristina Ribot said...

Hi everybody! It´s me again.Just for giving you a little clue.To convert feet into metres, you can look up your physics book.(lesson one)
See you tomorrow!

Hi Mireia!
Sorry,I was wrong with the question, I wanted to answer to question number 5, not to number 4.
So I am going to answer to question number 5
one of the catastrophic consequences that we can expect if we continue like nowadays are epidemics.

Is right now;)?
I hope it.
Thanks mireia

Good bye!

I guess you're now right. It makes sense. What I don't know is where on the website you read so.
Anyway, good job!

Hi mireiaa!^^

I have just seen your blogspot for the first time, since I couldn't have seen it before. It's very interesting. I have seen the docummentary and I like it!

I tell you the answer for the question seven;

They have to use the public transport and when they must go to some near site they going on foot.

bye mireia;
I see you tomorrow!(=

Mireia Xortó said...

Hi Sergi!
Your answer is correct but it had already been answered by Paula. I guess you didn't read her comment, so don't worry, it's not a big deal.
Thanks for participating!

Mireia Xortó said...

Hi Ariadna!
There's some evidence that you've been using a translator to write your comment. Don't do it again! It's very noticeable and useless.
If you had read the info in the English version of the site, you could have seen the following sentence: The flow of ice from glaciers in Greenland has more than doubled over the past decade.

Mireia Xortó said...

Hi Bea!
Thanks for your compliment!
Yes, you're right.
Anyway, have you read the info in English?
In the site we can read as follows:
Reduce the number of miles you drive by walking, biking, carpooling or taking mass transit wherever possible
'Mass transit' means public means of transport, too.
Do you know what 'carpooling' means? It means sharing your car. For instance, there's a teacher who lives in Barcelona and in the afternoon she always drives back home and gives a ride to two other teacher. She's therefore carpooling. She would be driving on her own, so she can drive two more people inside her car.
Hers is what we call a HOV, a High Occupancy Vehicle. These cars have lans reserved for them in the US.

Hi mireia!
I'm going to answer question number 6:
You can reduce the impact at home by moving your thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summer.
Good bye miriea!!!

Mireia Xortó said...

Hi Natàlia!
Awesome!
Almost half of the energy we use in our homes goes to heating and cooling. You could save about 2,000 pounds (908kg) of carbon dioxide a year with this simple adjustment.
Have a nice weekend!!!!!!!

hellow Mireia

1)it's the Sundance Film Festival hit.

Bye Mireia, happy weekend

Mireia Xortó said...

Hi Andreu!
Did you read your classmates' comments? That question had already been answered twice. Since it's the first time, don't worry, but next time pay attention.
Thanks for participating, anyway!
Bye!

Hi mireia!

5) that then it happened the planet Earth wrath to destroy itself

Laura said...

Hi MIreia!

I'm going to answer the question number 3:

This is a good thing because it keeps our planet habitable. However, by burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and clearing forests we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere and temperatures are rising.

I think that this answer is good,
but I prefer that you review it,
because I don't know if this answer is correct.

Good bye Mireia!!

Mireia Xortó said...

Hi Vicky!
Thanks for participating, but I don't understand your answer. Why don't you try looking at http://www.climatecrisis.net/thescience/, at the bottom of the page where it says 'If the warming continues, we can expect catastrophic consequences.'
See you tomorrow!

Mireia Xortó said...

Hi Laura!
Your answer is correct, you've copied it out from the site. I hope you have understood everything, though!
Good job!
See you on Monday!

Alicia Alonso said...

hellow Mireia!

I'm Alicia. This is the answer of the question six.

I think that we can reduce the impact at home with recycling. If we recycle the bottles, papers and cans, we can make stop the "tala de árboles".

See you soon. (tomorrow xD)

(K)

Mireia Xortó said...

Hi Alicia!
You're quite right, but I don't see how recycling bottles or cans could reduce the cutting of trees. Only by recycling paper can we reduce the cutting of trees. Ah! Next time you want to write a comment use a dictionary! You've got some good ones online in the list of links.
Bye!

Hi Mireia!
I've just seen in the TV news that Al Gore has won a Nobel prize and an Oscar for his fantastic video, 'An inconvenient truth'. This new has suprprised me because we're working on this personage.
I hope that I don't have a lot of mistakes, this time I have used my dictionary.
=s

see you soon!

Alicia.

Mireia Xortó said...

Hi Alicia!
As you have seen on TV, Al Gore has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his fight against climate change. Good news since we're working on him and his job right now.
I guess you can see what your mistakes were in my comment. Since you asked...
See you on Monday!
